    • Dogma: a declaration of the Church concerning a truth revealed by God that is necessary for our salvation.

    • Basing itself on sacred Scripture and sacred Tradition, the Catechism clearly teaches that anyone who dies unrepentant in mortal sin will go directly to hell (CCC 1033).
    • The teaching of the Church affirms the existence of hell and its eternity. Immediately after death the souls of those who die in a state of mortal sin descend into hell, where they suffer the punishments of hell, ‘eternal fire.’ (CCC1035)
    • No one should be deemed ignorant of the natural law, that is, the common human perception that unjust killing, stealing, lying, cheating and committing adultery is wrong. All human beings have an obligation to seek the truth about God and can’t comfortably rest in their supposed ignorance (CCC 1791)
    • “You have heard that it was said, ‘You shall not commit adultery.’ But I say to you that everyone who looks at a woman lustfully has already committed adultery with her in his heart. If your right eye causes you to sin, pluck it out and throw it away; it is better that you lose one of your members than that your whole body be thrown into hell. And if your right hand causes you to sin, cut it off and throw it away; it is better that you lose one of your members than that your whole body go into hell” (Matthew 5:27-30).
    • Enter by the narrow gate; for the gate is wide and the way is easy, that leads to destruction, and those who enter by it are many. For the gate is narrow and the way is hard, that leads to life, and those who find it are few” (CCC 1036; see also 1734, 1428).
    • Ralph Martin: The reality is that hell exists, and the unmistakable thrust of Scripture and the traditional interpretation of such Scriptures by the Church’s greatest theologians is that it is very likely that many people go there.
    • Cardinal Avery Dulles, perhaps the leading American theologian of the 20th century, asserted in a 2003 essay for First Things that up until the middle of the 20th century, there was no significant challenge to the traditional two outcome views of the Catholic Church — and that the prevailing theological consensus interpretation of sacred Scripture was that more were lost than were saved.
    • In parable after parable, God revealed to us that there will be a final separation of the human race at the end of time. The weeds will be thrown into the fire and burned; the wheat brought into the barn (Matthew 13:36-43). The wise virgins will enter the wedding feast, while the foolish virgins won’t (25:1-13); the good fish will be kept and the bad thrown away (13:47-50); the sons of the devil will be excluded from the Kingdom, as the sons of God will enter (1 John 3:10); those who were sympathetic to Jesus and even ate and drank with him but who didn’t believe in him or obey him will be excluded from the Kingdom (Luke 13: 22-30); those who believed and obeyed will enter. Also John 3:36b: He who does not obey the Son shall not see life, but the wrath of God rests upon him.
    • And they will go away into eternal punishment, but the righteous into eternal life’” (CCC 1038; Mt 25:46).
    • If we hold the belief that hell is mostly empty, there is a natural tendency for humanity to pay more attention to “improving the world” than to focus on the bold proclamation that the name of Jesus is the only name that can save anyone (Acts 4:12). Or that people need to “save themselves from this wicked generation” (Acts 2:40), through repentance, faith and baptism. Or that in order to escape the wrath that is coming (1 Thessalonians 1:10), they need to join themselves to Jesus and the Church and obey his commands.

  6. How People Go to Hell (from a Priest to Bud Macfarlane Jr.) – 2/11/25
    • Then, almost casually, <the priest> told to me how people go to hell. Over the decades, having been called by relatives to the deathbeds of countless souls, he was still disturbed by how many of the dying refused to see him, or upon seeing him, refused the final sacraments—he described one recent harrowing story about a man who screamed and threw fits to prevent him from even entering the room on multiple visits.
    • Father told me that people end up in hell after countless small choices over many, many years. This was how Satan gradually ensnares a soul—through thousands of small sins flowing into serious sins until the person’s conscience was deadened. They live life without repentance, and so they die unwilling to offer it.
    • Sweeny observed that people become very comfortable through this almost imperceptible ratcheting-effect Satan uses to lure them into stubborn indifference.
    • I learned from that. People are not aware, after years of degrading their consciences, that they are on the path to eternal damnation—even all the way to their deathbeds. We must take this into account when reaching out to them.
    • I cannot quote him perfectly, but he told me, sorrow in his voice, “People die the way they live. If they do not pray, receive the sacraments, and ask for God’s mercy during their lives, they will be unlikely to do so at the hour of their death. If they love God in life, they will have the love of God at the end and experience a peaceful death.” He was deeply troubled by the prospect of anyone going to hell. I learned from his example. Saints care deeply about the eternal destination of everyone.

    1. The DNR was pushed by doctors relentlessly during Covid and I have heard story after story as in the case with Kristi Schmadl’s mother, Joyce. She and her sister were contacted multiple times by her mother’s doctor and told to sign a DNR. They refused every time, but the doctor became irate and told them over the phone that if they did not sign a DNR they (the doctors) would put one on her, completely against the law. As you can see below, Kristi’s mom’s medical records clearly indicate the family wanted to transfer her mother to another hospital but the hospital already had plans to kill her with end of life care and a DNR.

    • As I explain in my book, A Catholic Guide to Mindfulness, the practice of mindfulness is derived from Buddhism and is specific to the seventh step in the Buddha’s Eight-Fold Path to enlightenment. Called Samma Sati, or Right Mindfulness, it means controlling thoughts by maintaining awareness and focus on the present moment. The way one is trained in mindfulness is through a variety of Buddhist meditation techniques such as Breathing Space Meditation, Movement Meditation, Body Scan Meditation, and Expanding Awareness Meditation, all of which involve intense focus on the self in the present moment.
    • 2009 study that found a long list of psychological and physical side effects of mindfulness meditation such as depersonalization, psychosis, feelings of anxiety, disorganized speech and insomnia, to name a few.
    • With mindfulness-based interventions, the aim is not to change your thoughts, but your global beliefs about thoughts – essentially, you’re expected to stop believing that your thoughts are necessarily true or important. This is where the Buddhist philosophy really kicks in: your thoughts are mere ‘mental events’ – just thoughts, nothing more – and they don’t necessarily warrant any action. All you’re aiming to do is be aware.” The Christian, on the other hand, is taught not to dismiss their thoughts as mere “mental events” but to “take captive every thought to make it obedient to Christ” (2 Cor 10:5). In this way they “put on the mind of Christ” (1 Cor 2:16) and make their thoughts holy and Christ-like.

    1. Pope Francis’ apostolic exhortation, Amoris Laetitia, in 2016 suggested that divorced and remarried couples (who are in adulterous unions) could, in some cases, receive Holy Communion. This undermines Christ’s teaching that “whoever divorces his wife and marries another commits adultery” (Luke 16:18). The failure to clearly uphold the sanctity of marriage encourages moral laxity.
    2. Fiducia Supplicans, a declaration issued by the Dicastery for the Doctrine of the Faith (DDF) in 2023 indicated that the Vatican now approves blessings for same-sex couples, despite Catholic teaching that homosexual acts are intrinsically disordered (CCC 2357). This creates confusion about purity and chastity, blurring the lines between sin and virtue.
    3. Also, the sexual abuse crisis, which exploded into public view in the early 2000’s and again in 2018 with the McCarrick scandal, is a direct violation of the Ninth Commandment. Many clergy, instead of upholding purity, fell into grave sins of lust and preyed upon the innocent. Pope Francis refused to answer the accusations in the Vigano testimony, which alleged that he protected and promoted figures like McCarrick, despite knowing of his immoral behavior.
    4. Modernists in the Church often reduce Christianity to a political movement focused only on social justice, economics, and environmentalism. Pope Francis and many bishops talk constantly about poverty, migrants, and climate change, but rarely about sin, salvation, and eternal life. While Catholics must help the poor, the Church’s primary mission is the salvation of souls – not economic activism. The modernist Church encourages envy-based activism instead of personal virtue and detachment from wealth. True Christian poverty is voluntary detachment, not government-enforced redistribution.
    5. The Tenth Commandment warns us against desiring what belongs to others, whether through greed, envy, or resentment. Modernism twists Catholic teaching by promoting class warfare, financial corruption, and a materialistic focus instead of spiritual detachment.

    • In the fourth century, St. Cyril of Jerusalem described the practice of Communion in the hand. However, his description is not consistent with how Communion in the hand is done today.
    • In the 1969 instruction Memoriale Domini, the Holy See offered the bishops of the world permission to distribute Communion in the hand, noting that: “[The traditional] method of distributing Holy Communion must be retained… not merely because it has many centuries of tradition behind it, but especially because it expresses the faithful’s reverence for the Eucharist.
    • a most unfortunate development has been attempts by priests and even some bishops to enforce uniformity in the manner of receiving Holy Communion by refusing it to those who wish to receive on the tongue, or by remonstrating with them afterward. Memoriale Domini forbids pressure on the faithful to confirm to the novel practice, as does a later instruction, Redemptionis Sacramentum: “It is not licit to deny Holy Communion to any of Christ’s faithful solely on the grounds, for example, that the person wishes to receive the Eucharist kneeling or standing,” and “each of the faithful always has the right to receive Holy Communion on the tongue, at his choice”

    1. Using retrospective survey data from over 200,000 people across four decades, they reconstructed religious attendance rates going back to the 1920s in 66 countries. It is the most ambitious dataset on religious behavior ever created.
    2. “Vatican II, in 1962–1965, triggered a decline in worldwide Catholic attendance relative to that in other denominations….The Catholic relative attendance rate fell by four percentage points per decade between 1965 and 2015.”
    3. It’s not a fallacy when the event is temporally proximate, globally consistent, uniquely Catholic in its devastation, and empirically verified using control groups. That’s called a causal link.

  69. Seven Mysteries About the Nephilim – Jimmy Akin, 11/18/25.
    • 1) Who are the “sons of God” in this passage?

      2) Who are the “daughters of men”?

      3) Why does God say that man’s “days shall be 120 years”?  This references the interval of time (grace period) remaining before the Flood.

      4) Who were the Nephilim?  They were unusually tall giants.

      5) What is the relationship joining the sons of God, the daughters of men, and the Nephilim?   The Nephilim were the children of the sons of God and the daughters of men.

      6) Why does the text say the Nephilim were on the earth “in those days, and also afterward”?  The Nephilim were on the earth both before and after the Flood because the sons of God and the daughters of men mated twice.  Numbers 13:33 says the spies Moses sends into the Promised Land report that there, “we saw the Nephilim.”

      7) Do these events have anything to do with the Great Flood which this passage introduces?  Yes.

      If the sons of God and the daughters of men mated both before and after the Flood, then they must have been around both before and after the Flood.

      That eliminates one of the possibilities for who they were. According to some authors, the “sons of God” represent the righteous line that came from Adam and Eve’s son Seth, whereas the “daughters of men” were the wicked line that came from their son Cain.

      This “Sethite/Cainite” interpretation is problematic because the language of the text does not suggest it. It is unsupported speculation to propose that the sons of God were descendants of Seth. Even worse, the phrase “the daughters of men” does not suggest the descendants of Cain.

      But Genesis 6:4’s statement that “the sons of God came in to the daughters of man” both before and after the Flood eliminates this possibility, because the line of Cain did not survive the Flood.

    1. Because the line of Cain did not survive the Flood, the Sethite/Cainite interpretation for the Sons of God and Daughters of Men is incorrect.
    2. The phrase “sons of God” is never applied to rulers like kings. Elsewhere in the Bible it always refers to angelic beings, either angels or demons.
